How to transfer YouTube channel ownership safely
Whether you hired someone to build your channel or you're passing it to a business partner, never share a password. YouTube has a built-in way to transfer ownership.
Why not just share the login?
Sharing a Google login is risky. Password and phone changes from a new location often trigger security locks, and the old owner may still have recovery access. Brand Account ownership avoids all of this.
Step 1: Make sure the channel is a Brand Account
Brand Accounts can have several owners. If the channel was created as a separate channel under Add or manage your channel(s), it's already a Brand Account.
Step 2: Invite the new owner
- Go to myaccount.google.com/brandaccounts and choose the channel.
- Click Manage permissions → Invite new users.
- Enter the new owner's Google email and set the role to Owner.
- They accept from the email Google sends them.
Step 3: Wait 7 days, then make them primary owner
Google requires a new owner to have been an owner for at least 7 days before they can become the primary owner. After that, open Manage permissions, choose Primary owner next to their name and confirm with Transfer.
Step 4: Remove the old owner
Once the transfer is done, the previous owner can be removed, or kept on as a manager if they're still helping with uploads.
This is exactly how we hand over every channel we build: our clients own 100% of it, and no passwords ever change hands.
Want this done for you?
